Some patients conceive in their first cycle, while others may need more than one. On average, most couples achieve success within 2–3 IVF cycles, though this varies with age and fertility history.

• If you are under 35, have no symptoms and no suspicious reports — wait up to 1 year of trying naturally.
• If age 35–37 and otherwise normal — consider consultation after 6 months.
• If over 37–38 — do not wait more than 3 months; seek a fertility centre.

If you have symptoms (irregular or painful periods, recurrent miscarriages), or male partner has problems, come right away for investigations so a correct treatment plan can be formulated.

Both partners are investigated simultaneously. After clinical review, testing begins for both male and female.

Male: Semen analysis (count, motility, morphology), infection markers, antisperm antibody testing and additional tests if azoospermia is present.

Female: Transvaginal ultrasound (antral follicle count, uterine contour, fibroids/polyps, hydrosalpinx), blood tests (AMH, FSH/LH on cycle day 2–3 if needed), and other tailored investigations.

After results, a couple consultation decides the plan forward.

Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) is produced by growing ovarian follicles and indicates ovarian reserve (quantity of remaining follicles). AMH declines with age and, advantageously, does not vary by cycle day — it can be measured any day unlike FSH/LH which are done on day 2–3.

AMH is one important parameter but not the sole decision-maker for treatment or egg donation — age, antral follicle count, prior outcomes and clinical context matter too.

Male infertility may be caused by low sperm count, poor sperm motility, abnormal sperm shape, hormonal issues, or blockages in the reproductive tract. Lifestyle factors like smoking, alcohol, and stress also play a role.

Diagnosis includes semen analysis and, if needed, genetic or hormonal tests. Treatments may involve lifestyle changes, medications, surgical correction, or advanced IVF methods such as ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), which allows even very low sperm counts to achieve pregnancy.

Azoospermia (no sperm) prompts evaluation for obstructive vs non-obstructive causes (hormonal tests, ultrasound, specialized markers). In some cases surgical sperm retrieval (TESE/MESA) with ICSI is an option.

Hysterosalpingography (HSG), saline sonography, and diagnostic laparoscopy/hysteroscopy are tools used depending on the scenario.

Side effects can include bloating, mood changes, injection discomfort and rarely ovarian hyperstimulation which needs prompt attention.

Balanced diet rich in whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats and micronutrients (folate, vitamin D, B12, iron) supports reproductive health. Avoid smoking and limit alcohol.
