Ovarian Cyst and Infertility

Over half of all women will face the problem of Ovarian Cysts sometime in their lives. Ovarian Cysts could be a varying types, size, appearance and histo-pathological character

What is the meaning of Cyst?

A Cyst means a sac of tissue filled with abnormal accumulation of fluid. Cysts could be ‘functional’ or simple wherein the underlying cause is physiological and there is nothing to intervene. Functional Cysts resolve on their own. Other types of Cysts are ‘Pathological’ or complex wherein there is an underlying abnormality that led to the formation of the Cyst. If the Cyst is cancerous for example then surgery might be needed.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts

  • Usually no symptoms - they are painless and patient doesn’t know she has them
  • If grown to large proportions Cysts can lead to abdominal ache, discomfort, bloating, constipation or dull lower back pain
  • If haemorrhage or other acute event it can lead to an acute abdomen
  • Twisting of the Cyst is associated with sudden, severe excruciating pain

Can Ovarian Cysts cause Infertility?

It depends on the type and size of the Cyst. Providing the best female infertility treatment in Delhi, functional or simple Cysts usually denote a temporary hormonal imbalance. Functional Cysts are quite commonly seen after taking ovulation induction drugs like Clomiphene Citrate. If the Cyst is a tumour or Endometriotic, it can certainly cause infertility. It is thus important to properly evaluate the Ovarian Cyst and manage accordingly.

What are some types of commonly seen Ovarian Cysts?

Cysts could be classified based on the underlying tissue architecture and histo-pathological examination. There are various types of Cysts like Dermoid Cyst, Endometriotic (chocolate) Cyst, Corpus Luteum Cyst, Follicular Cyst, Serous adenomatous Cyst, Mucinous Adenomatous Cyst, etc. The main concern about treating Ovarian Cysts is ruling out carcinoma (cancer). Depending on the appearance of the Cyst on Ultrasound and Doppler studies, further tests like C T Scan or MRI can be advised if there is a suspicion of malignancy. If found ominous, a staging laparotomy is then done to debulk as much cancerous tissue as possible during the surgery. If however the Cyst is found to be benign a simple Cystectomy wherein only the Cyst is removed is done so that the ovaries are preserved for future fertility.

Tests to be done

  • Ultrasound scan with Doppler
  • CT Scan or MRI if deemed necessary
  • CA 125 blood test
  • Frozen section biopsy at the time of surgery
