After fertilization, the human embryo grows and keeps dividing cells - first become 2 cellular at around 28 hours, 4 celled at around 42 hours, and 8 cellular on day 3. On day 5 or 6, it is a multi-cellular embryo called ‘Blastocyst’. The embryo has an outer shell called Zona Pellucida or just ‘Zona', in short. In order to achieve a pregnancy, the embryo must break out of this shell and attach and then burrow inside the maternal womb lining called endometrium. This process of breaking out of its shell is called “Hatching” and it occurs naturally in all embryos before they implant.
Undergoing an IVF or ICSI procedure and then failing to conceive takes a toll on both financial and emotional health of the partners. It is psychologically stressful to go through multiple failed IVF attempts. One of the reasons of having failed IVF cycles is the inability of the embryos to hatch on their own.
